Here’s some hockey news I found on the Red Wings site. There’s only one thing wrong…New Year Eve is January 31. I read that the tradition of NYE at the Joe is returning this year when the Wings play the Colorado Avalanche. I’m all excited! Then… In the sentence prior, the article states the Wings will be playing the Stanley Cup Champs Pittsburgh Penguins on January 31 at Mellon Arena. Am I missing something here?
DETROIT — The Red Wings will open the North American portion of their 2009-10 regular-season with a home game against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 8 at Joe Louis Arena.
WINGS CORNER
Wings’ Pre-Season Schedule
The Wings defeated the Blackhawks in the Western Conference finals to advance to the Stanley Cup finals against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Detroit will play the Stanley Cup champion Penguins twice in ‘09-10; at Mellon Arena on Jan. 31 and at Joe Louis Arena on March 22.
This season will also mark the return of the traditional New Year’s Eve game at JLA. This year’s opponent will be the Colorado Avalanche. It’ll be the first time that Avs have played in Detroit on New Year’s Eve.
The Wings have played in 62 New Year’s Eve games, posting a 32-22-8 all-time record.
The Red Wings begin the NHL regular-season with a pair of games against the St. Louis Blues in Stockholm, Sweden. The games will be played at Globe Arena on Oct. 2 and Oct. 3.
