Six months and a week after my ttotal knee replacement, my curiousity got the best of me. I wanted to see how my knee has advanced since my days of physical therapy (which has been about 4 months ago). Here’s a little background info to lead up to my “discovery” today:
While going through physical therapy, there were two pieces of equipment that was vital to my recuperation – an exercise bike and a leg extender. Towards the end of my therapy, I would use the exercise bike at seat level 4 to warm up for 2 minutes. Then, I would move the seat level down to 3 and use the machine for another 5 minutes. It was painful and very, very slow. It was an excellent workout that I enjoyed doing – irregardless of the pain.
The leg extender machine was at 10 pounds and there was no way I could lift just my left leg (surgery leg). I needed to use both legs. And, the 10 pounds was all I could handle at the time. Still, it was a great workout for me.
Well, today I went to the gym. I used the exercise bike and got remarkable results (if I say so myself). I started at seat level four and worked my way down to no level simply because I didn’t feel I was getting any kind of workout at the higher levels. Nice. Still, there is some pain. Well, not some pain – it was very painful at times. I expected that though, and am not complaining. It felt good, actually.
It was quite nice to use the bike at 0 level. I took many breaks, but who cares? As slow as the pedaling was, the workout was a great one. 🙂
When using the leg extender, I could lift 20 pounds with just my left leg. Just my left leg. 🙂 How cool is that?! It was kind of tough, though. I did 10 repetitions, with needed breaks.
All this was possible simply from walking regularly. Plain and simple walking. (It’s not plain and simple when impossible to do, though. 🙂 )
I’m writing this simply to state that continuous “working” at rehab pays off. My flexibility still has a way to go, but it’s getting there. 🙂
