Sometimes when one is watching a hockey game, the term “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” – or, “A Gordie”, is used. You may be wondering what this is. So…
A “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” is when one player scores a goal, gets an assist, and gets into a fight – all within one game. This term is appropriate since Gordie was known for both his playing and fighting abilities. (That’s an understatement, by the way).
A “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” came about since it involves three events (goal, assist, fight) and has its base in another popular hockey term requiring three events…“hat trick”. A “hat trick” involves one player scoring three goals in one game.
So, the next time you’re watching a hockey game and hear that someone took part in a “Gordie”…you know what it means. 🙂
