Quit Whining About Detroit Red Wings

It happened again. I heard another hockey ‘fan’ gripe about being tired of the Detroit Red Wings winning all the time. While watching NHL Live! (broadcast on the NHL Network), a caller from Pittsburgh was whining about how unfair it is about the Wings. This person, like so many others, is disgruntled with the Wings winning the Stanley Cup. “Give someone else a chance” is the motto. “The officials are favoring the Wings”. “The boards are favoring the Wings”. Spare me….

Yes, it is true that since the late 1990’s, the Detroit Red Wings have won their fair share of Stanley Cups. That is only because the team went through a 43 year draught where they stunk so bad even garbage trucks driving by would have workers plugging their nose.

43 years. That’s a long time to go without any accolades.

The current state of the Red Wings is due to the fact that their ownership (Mike and Marian Ilitch), management, and all involved with the team demand excellence of everyone involved. It has nothing to do with being given favors. It has nothing to do with having excellent boards made of super special materials. In fact, if other teams would learn from the Wings instead of whining about unfair treatment, perhaps they could learn a few things about utilizing different aspects of the sport.

Saying the officials favor the Wings (always said by the losing team and fans, btw) is absurd. If that was the case, the officials would be out of a job. There is a conspiracy theory going around now among some opposing fans that is simply a reflection of the fans’ ignorance. Whenever there is a bad call made against the Wings, you don’t see them crying and whining to the general public about how unfair refs are. No…they know it’s part of the game, pick up the pieces, learn from it, and go forward. That is the sign of a winner.

So, in closing, quit your whining about how unfair it is that the Detroit Red Wings win so often. Instead, appreciate excellence, learn from it, and enjoy the game of hockey as it is meant to be played.

As any true hockey fan will realize, the Detroit Red Wings’ organization is a class act from top to bottom.
