Response to Detroit Bad Mouthing…

I recently received another article using Detroit as an example of the falling apart of our country. Much of the information may have been true, but nowhere was anything good pointed out. My initial reaction was defensive. So…I wrote this reply. I thought I’d share it…It may offend some of you, but that’s life. Some others may agree. That’s life….

I am from Detroit. Well, a northwest suburb, otherwise known as “white class middle America” that is 25 miles from downtown Detroit. I saw the immigration of Lebanese and other “foreigners” into the city. Greektown, a wonderful multicultural area, was established to introduce the international cuisine and lifestyle to others.

It is true that there are welfare recipients not willing to work. The more children they have, the more they collect governmental aid. That will happen anywhere. Sad, but true. It is true that the unemployment rate is high. That started back in the 70’s with the initial downsizing of the auto industry. Back then, laying off 100-200K at a time was common. The auto industry was not prepared for the oil embargo. Etc..etc. The current financial times are so upsetting, even my brother lost our family house due to the banking industry’s greed. My own brother. My family house. Gone.

It also is true that there is a tremendous pride in a city that involves rich tradition. The Gold Cup races on the Detroit River have been occurring since the 1920’s. Yes, financial times have taken a strain. However, to see the city and state come together for one week out of the year is FANTASTIC! There is no racial tension, no concern about unemployment, etc. etc. Everyone is there for the pure pleasure of enjoying each others’ company and passion. 500,000+ strong. Strangers become friends and stories are shared. Just great. There is a pride and pure enjoyment about being part of a tradition that few areas of the country experience. (Seafair is comparable…but the course is no comparison to thrill level).

The Detroit Red Wings, our hockey team, date back to the 1920’s. Only six other cities in the North American continent can be so steeped in tradition. To anyone who is not a hockey fan, the tradition and history still need to be appreciated and respected. Irregardless of how “bad” Detroit is, fans and media members show up at the games. There’s something downright exciting about going to Joe Louis Arena, which is located along the Detroit River waterfront (in downtown Detroit). Even with an employment of 28%, the pride exists. The tickets are sold. Does the email article say that? No…only the negative.

If the city of Detroit is so “bad”, why has MGM decided to build (and has built) a multi-million dollar casino there? Why is the Super Bowl held there? Why has a multi-casino area developed? Does the e-mail article state that? No…

Detroit and its surrounding communities lead medical science in technological advancements. The University of Michigan is a leading teaching institution which draws worldwide visitors, students and attention. Does the email article state that? No…

Yes, my body has left Michigan due to economic times. Yes, it is sad to see what has happened to the auto industry, banking industry, etc. However, I am tired of hearing about how “bad” Detroit is. To use the city as an example of the fall of our nation is disgusting. What is disgusting is how Washington sits on their ass and bickers among themselves while this GREAT COUNTRY of ours falls apart. How there were no controls in place to prevent the financial industry from raping citizens of their livelihood. Any auditor could have nipped that in the bud, but did they? No. How money is given to the financial industry without any stipulations. How the auto industry execs (from DETROIT) were treated like criminals when requesting money to keep the industry alive while Wall Street execs WALK FREE or get a mild slap on the hand. How illegal immigrants are thinking they are entitled to US citizen benefits while the bleeding hearts agree. This country has gotten so politically correct it’s repulsive. If you live in this great country of ours, SPEAK THE LANGUAGE (English).
